The Evolving Trends of Consumer Impact on Pet Nutrition
To many consumers, pets are seen as members of their family. As such, there has been a steady climb in the humanization of our furry family members. This means that pet owners are reflecting their values, such as environmental consciousness and dietary health trends, into the choices they are also making when purchasing for their pets.
For example, one trend that has been gaining popularity with humans over the past few years has been the switch to a flexitarian diet, a conscious move to reduce the amount of animal protein one consumes. And as consumers make this choice for themselves, they are also creating a demand for alternative, non-animal protein ingredients in pet foods.
One way this shows up in consumer trends is a shift in the attitude of using soy, corn, and wheat as a valuable source of nutrition in food and treats for cats and dogs. Three independent consumer surveys conducted by ADM reveal that 80% of today's U.S. pet owners actively seek or are open to incorporating these ingredients into their pets’ diets.
